Spain has barred its airspace from being used by aircraft involved in military operations against Iran, according to a report by El País, marking a significant shift in its stance amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

The restriction goes beyond banning the use of Spanish bases such as Rota and Morón air bases by fighter jets and refueling aircraft. It also prevents US aircraft stationed in third countries, including the UK and France, from transiting through Spanish airspace if they are involved in operations targeting Iran.

Flights and landings will only be permitted in emergency situations under the new directive.

Spain had already taken steps earlier in March to block the use of its military bases for strikes against Iran, signaling growing caution over deeper involvement in the conflict.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez warned lawmakers on March 25 that the current Middle East conflict is more severe than the Iraq War, stressing the importance of avoiding past mistakes.

The decision comes as the US and Israel continue military operations against Iran for a second consecutive month, with major disruptions to global shipping following the near-total closure of the Strait of Hormuz and a sharp rise in energy prices.

Washington has also faced challenges in rallying European allies to join efforts to secure key maritime routes, as many countries remain focused on supporting Ukraine.
