South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has issued an apology to North Korea following a reported drone incident that heightened tensions between the two countries.

The president stated that although the government was not responsible for the drone launches, he expressed regret over the situation and acknowledged that the actions caused unnecessary military tension.

The controversy dates back to January, when North Korea accused drones launched from the South of violating its airspace. Pyongyang described the incident as a serious provocation and claimed that its forces had shot down the drones.

Earlier reports from North Korea’s military indicated that drones allegedly crossed into its airspace on multiple occasions, including late September and early January.

Amid the dispute, a 30-year-old graduate student in South Korea publicly claimed responsibility for flying drones over North Korean territory between September and January. He said the flights were intended to measure radiation levels at nuclear-related facilities in the North.

South Korean prosecutors had previously charged three civilians, including the graduate student, with aiding the enemy. Authorities are also investigating potential connections between the individuals and military intelligence officials.

The incident adds to ongoing tensions on the Korean Peninsula, where military activity and surveillance concerns continue to strain relations between the two nations.
