South Africa’s government is developing a targeted plan to reduce electricity costs for key industrial sectors, according to Minister of Electricity and Energy Kgosientsho Ramokgopa. This was reported by IOL, according to TV Bicks.

The initiative is part of broader efforts to enhance the sustainability and international competitiveness of energy-intensive industries. The proposed measures aim to improve operating conditions for strategic manufacturers and support long-term industrial growth.

Ramokgopa said the plan focuses on optimising primary energy inputs, particularly coal, which accounts for about 40 per cent of electricity generation costs. By addressing coal input pricing through targeted mechanisms, the government expects to lower electricity costs for qualifying industries in a balanced manner.

The minister noted that discussions are ongoing with industry leaders on structured solutions, including the use of available coal resources at more efficient rates. These measures are intended to reduce processing and energy costs while maintaining overall economic stability.

The approach prioritises sectors critical to industrial development, including ferrochrome production, and reflects the government’s commitment to energy reforms that support competitiveness, job retention, and inclusive economic progress.
