High-level discussions between the Somali government and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) took place on Tuesday, focusing on enhancing the protection and welfare of displaced populations within the country.

Ahmed Hussein Elmi, head of the Somali Agency for Refugees and IDPs (NCRI), met with Jing Song, the UNHCR Deputy Representative in Somalia, to explore new avenues for cooperation. The talks centered on the rights of refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and the safe reintegration of Somali refugees returning from abroad.

A Commitment to Vulnerable Groups According to the Somali National News Agency (SONA), Elmi emphasized the agency's ongoing efforts to serve the most vulnerable segments of society. He stressed that improved coordination between local and international bodies is essential to developing effective services and ensuring the long-term well-being of displaced communities.

Legislative Progress Praised Jing Song commended the Somali government’s proactive role in addressing displacement issues. She specifically highlighted the recent passage of new refugee and IDP protection laws, describing them as a "foundational pillar" for safeguarding the rights of those affected by conflict and environmental displacement.

The UNHCR pledged to expand its support and deepen its collaboration with the Federal Government of Somalia. This commitment includes technical assistance and funding for programs aimed at facilitating voluntary returns and local integration.

Focus on Voluntary Return A key priority identified during the meeting was the support of Somali citizens choosing to return home. Both parties reaffirmed their dedication to international cooperation and the implementation of practical programs designed to transform the lives of returnees and provide them with sustainable livelihood opportunities.
