The Federal Republic of Somalia has formally expressed its gratitude to Egypt for its continued support of Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, according to a statement issued by Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
In the statement, Somalia welcomed Egypt’s firm position rejecting any unilateral actions that undermine state sovereignty or territorial unity, stressing that such actions violate established principles of international law and the United Nations Charter.
Egypt Condemns Unilateral Recognition of “Somaliland”
Cairo reiterated its strong condemnation of Israel’s unilateral recognition of the so-called “Somaliland,” describing it as a blatant violation of international law and the UN Charter. Egypt warned that such a move undermines the foundations of international peace and security and contributes to further instability in the Horn of Africa region.
Egypt also reaffirmed its absolute rejection of recognizing parallel entities or illegal secessionist moves, emphasizing its full support for Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity in line with international law, the UN Charter, and the principles of the African Union.
Somali Leadership Discusses National Response
On Monday, Somalia’s National Consultative Council convened in Mogadishu under the chairmanship of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to discuss several critical national issues, foremost among them addressing Israel’s recognition of Somaliland and safeguarding Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial unity.
The meeting, held at the Presidential Palace, was attended by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, Deputy Prime Minister Saleh Ahmed Jama, the presidents of South West State, Galmudug, Hirshabelle, and North East State, as well as the Governor of Banadir and Mayor of Mogadishu, Hassan Mohamed Hussein (Mungab).
Firm Commitment to Somalia’s Unity
The council reaffirmed Somalia’s unwavering position on preserving its territorial integrity and national sovereignty, as guaranteed by the Provisional Constitution of the Federal Republic of Somalia, the United Nations Charter, and the African Union Charter.
It also expressed deep appreciation to brotherly and friendly countries and international organizations that have supported Somalia’s unity and territorial integrity, while simultaneously standing against what the council described as Israeli aggression that violates international law.
