The Federal Government of Somalia has reiterated its unwavering commitment to a transition process led by its own citizens, aiming to solidify national institutions and preserve recent gains in peace and state-building.
Ali Mohamed Omar, Somalia’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, emphasized this stance during a high-level meeting with the United Nations Transitional Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS). The UN delegation was led by Acting Head Raisedon Zenenga and accompanied by Vikram Parekh.
Transition of Responsibilities
The discussions centered on the strategic handover of tasks from the international mission to national authorities. As Somalia continues to navigate a shifting political and security landscape, the government is prioritizing a "Somali-led and Somali-owned" approach to ensure long-term stability.
According to reports from the Somali National News Agency (SONA), both parties discussed the latest security developments and the evolution of the country’s political framework.
Aligning International Support
A key takeaway from the meeting was the shared emphasis on enhanced coordination. Minister Omar and the UN officials stressed that international support must remain strictly aligned with Somalia’s national priorities. By synchronizing global aid with local initiatives, the government hopes to foster a more resilient environment for sustainable development and national security.
This dialogue marks a significant step in the planned transition of UNTMIS responsibilities, signaling Somalia’s growing confidence in managing its own administrative and security affairs.
