Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), in coordination with international partners, has announced the killing of senior Al-Shabaab leader Mohamed Abdi Tablawi Afrah.

According to the Somali National News Agency, the operation was carried out in the Ogonji area of Lower Shabelle region. The militant commander was traveling in a vehicle with one of his aides when security forces targeted them, killing both instantly.

Authorities identified Afrah as the mastermind of the March 18 terrorist attack on the presidential convoy, which he allegedly orchestrated. He was also implicated in multiple recent terror attacks that claimed the lives of civilians across the country.

NISA emphasized that further details about the operation and evidence confirming Afrah’s involvement in acts of terrorism will be revealed in due course.

This marks another significant blow to Al-Shabaab, the extremist group linked to al-Qaeda, as Somali security forces—backed by international allies—continue their intensified counterterrorism operations across the country.
