The Somali National Army, in coordination with the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), has regained control of key strategic locations in the Lower Shabelle region, dealing a significant blow to the Al-Shabaab militant group.
According to the Somali National News Agency, Somali forces recently reasserted control over the areas of Gendershe and Tannani, dismantling hideouts used by Al-Shabaab fighters in the region.
Military units pursued the militants into cave systems in the Gendershe area, where they had retreated after coming under coordinated attacks from multiple directions. Security officials said the operation targeted the group’s remaining strongholds following earlier clashes.
Colonel Sahed Jama Farah, commander of the First Brigade of the elite Gorgor Commandos, said officers from the Somali army and the national intelligence agency had successfully taken control of the most important positions previously used by the militants in Lower Shabelle.
He added that the ongoing operations have significantly weakened Al-Shabaab’s operational capabilities, resulted in the killing of senior militant leaders, and enabled government forces to recapture several strategic areas that had been under militant control.
Lower Shabelle has long been considered a key battleground in Somalia’s fight against Al-Shabaab due to its strategic location and proximity to the capital, Mogadishu. The latest gains underscore the government’s continued push to restore security and extend state authority across southern Somalia.
