Somalia’s permanent representative to the Arab League on Sunday condemned Israel's reported recognition of the breakaway region of Somaliland, labeling the move an "aggressive and provocative act" that violates the sovereignty of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

Speaking at an extraordinary meeting of the Arab League permanent representatives in Cairo, Ambassador Ali Abdi Awari described the recognition of the northwestern region as a "flagrant and unprecedented violation of international law," UN resolutions, and the charters of both the Arab League and the African Union.

"This Israeli measure is considered null, void, and of no effect," Awari told the council. "It will not change the established fact that the northwestern region, known as 'Somaliland,' is an integral part of the territory of the Federal Republic of Somalia, and our national unity is non-negotiable".

The ambassador linked the move to a broader "aggressive approach" by Israel aimed at undermining state legitimacy and encouraging separatist movements.

He further alleged that after the war in Gaza, Israel is now supporting a separatist entity in Somalia as part of a strategy to facilitate the "forced displacement of the Palestinian people".

"Somalia will not be a party to any endeavor to displace our Palestinian brothers from their land," Awari said. He pledged that Somalia would use its seat on the UN Security Council for the 2025-2026 term, and specifically its presidency of the council in January 2026, to "thwart these plans".

The Somali diplomat characterized the development as a direct threat not only to Somalia but to "Arab national security as a whole" and the safety of navigation in the Red Sea.

Awari concluded by calling on Arab nations to stand firmly against these "repeated Israeli aggressions" and to establish serious policies to prevent their recurrence.
