Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported, on Thursday, that 13 people were killed during an overnight raid by US special operations forces in northwestern Syria.

"13 people at least were killed, among them 4 children and 3 women, during the operation," SOHR said, noting that the death toll could rise in the coming period as some of the wounded are in serious conditions.

The raid, which was believed to have targeted a leading jihadist, began around midnight in the Atmeh area near the Turkish border, Iskenderun, north of Idlib.

Residents stated that helicopters landed and heavy gunfire and explosions were heard during the raid.

"U.S. Special Operations forces under the control of U.S. Central Command conducted a counter-terrorism mission this evening in northwest Syria. The mission was successful," Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby said in a statement.

"There were no U.S. casualties. More information will be provided as it becomes available."
