Spanish Socialist Francina Armengol, the candidate of the conservative People's Party, was appointed as the new Speaker of the Spanish Parliament after winning 178 votes in the 350-seat parliament.
Far-right Vox voted for its candidate, Ignacio Gil.
The People's Party captured more seats than the Socialists (PSOE) in the latest elections, however, they failed to have the majority to form a government.
The PSOE became the second force in the Lower House of the Spanish Congress and they seek to form a government with the support of other forces like Sumar, Esquerra Republicana (ERC), and Together for Catalonia (Junts).
Armengol was the leader of the Catalan Balearic Islands from 2015 to 2023, and she headed a coalition with the Podemos and ERC.
