I followed up the problem of Shahd, the cyclist national team player, that was raised recently, accusing her of intentionally making aggressive maneuvers against competitor Janna Eliwa knocking her into a cement barrier, so Shahd was suspended for a year, then she was selected to represent Egypt in the Paris Olympics. We are not specialists in the field of investigation and reviewing international and local laws, but this raises another very important issue, which is the problem of social media and its impact on making decisions.
The problem with sporting events is that they affect social media and public opinion directly, to the point that any sporting event in which a million critics, analysts, and fans interact with one team against another, this happens all over the world, but it has now attracted a large portion of the public’s attention and the reactions of officials.
Officials are supposed to clarify the facts and laws. If there is a loophole in some laws, it can be fixed. Parliament can interfere and the media is supposed to take a neutral position and not play with the feelings of the masses.
But it is dangerous to make decisions based on the pressure of social media or the loudest voice among the sports fans, and I have noticed from what has been published and raised in the media arena recently and the uproar surrounding Shahad Saeed, especially after the intervention of the Ministry of Youth, which sent a letter to re-examine the position of the player’s participation and the procedures taken by the Federation!
I believe that the laws of all games limit the phenomenon of deliberate harm and set punishments according to the report of the technical committees, but they did not prevent it. Often, the money of the world cannot make a player return to the football stadiums due to his injury. This is the risk of sports in general. I demand that the punishment be tougher than punishing the wrong player for the same mistake twice or dragging one team against the other in the courts as if they are alimony issues and not sports ones in which there are a winner and a loser and they have their own laws.
Anyways, I hope that the final decision will be based on justice, laws, and logic!
