Slovakia is set to implement significant cuts to financial aid for Ukrainian refugees, according to a report by the TASR news agency.

Slovak President Peter Pellegrini recently signed legislation reducing the government’s financial support for refugee housing costs. The changes are scheduled to take effect on 1 March 2025.

Under the new law, Ukrainian refugees will be eligible for government housing subsidies for only 60 days, a reduction from the current 120 days.

Additionally, refugees will be limited to two months when they can access government-funded accommodation in migration centers.

The Slovak Parliament approved these amendments to the financial support scheme in June, with the Interior Ministry highlighting the impact on about 20,000 Ukrainian refugees currently in Slovakia.

These refugees are protected under the temporary protection status granted by the European Commission in March 2022.

Eurostat data shows this status remains valid and has been extended annually, effective until March 2026.
