Slovak Prime Minister Igor Matovic announced, Friday, that he was infected with Coronavirus, a week after his participation in a European Union summit in Brussels.

"Today, I am one of you," Matovic wrote on his Facebook page, attaching a screenshot of a text message with his test results.

“For nine months, I'm constantly fighting people who measure the rate of the pandemics only by the amount of closed bars and huck people against measures and (own) government,” Matovic added. “I admit, I can't anymore and I was looking forward to at least a few days without stress.”

He urged people to be careful during holidays, saying: “Now it looks different for the holidays. Please be extra careful. I know how to look at a stranger as a number in line is comfortable and popular with many nowadays.”

"I was to spend the Christmas holidays helping out at a hospital. Now my plans will likely be a little different," the 47-year-old PM continued.

The government's press department told AFP that Slovak PM had tested positive on Thursday, cancelling all his events.

The EU summit is suspected to be where French President Emmanuel Macron caught the virus, leading a host of European leaders and top French officials to go into self-isolation.

Deputy Prime Minister Veronika Remisova and Defence Minister Jaroslav Nad announced that they were also infected with coronavirus.

Macron and Slovak PM are considered the latest heads of government around the world to test positive for the virus, following British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, and US President Donald Trump.

It’s noteworthy that Slovakia has registered, since the pandemic, more than 146,000 confirmed infections, including nearly 4,000 new cases on Thursday.

The country of 5.4 million people registered  more than 1,400 death cases from the virus, including 62 people on Thursday.
