The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) announced on Monday that 11 cases of monkeypox have been reported so far this year, all of which were of the less lethal "Clade 2" strain. The most recent case was reported in August.
In a statement, the agency noted that health authorities have intensified border screening to address the new, more deadly strain, according to South Korea's Yonhap News Agency.
The KDCA added that, unlike respiratory diseases, monkeypox is unlikely to spread through daily activities and urged the public to maintain basic health measures.
Earlier this month, the KDCA decided to reclassify the viral disease as an infectious disease subject to border screening.
