The Group of Seven Summit, known as G7, in France will discuss various international topics, most importantly terrorism and counter extremism, according to Presidential Spokesperson Bassam Rady.
“President Abdel Fattah El Sisi arrived in Biarritz, France, to attend the G7 Summit in a response to an official invitation from French President Emmanuel Macron,” Rady added.
The spokesman said that counter terrorism and cyber-attacks, illegal migration and human trafficking, inequality and women empowerment, especially in Africa, global economy and financial developments and topics related to climate change and environment will be tackled.
Sisi to deliver speech before world leaders
“Sisi is expected to deliver a speech before the G7 and Africa Partnership Summit,” Rady noted.
Egypt is currently chairing the African Union (AU).
In Feb, Sisi was elected chairman of the African Union at the continental body's summit in Ethiopia.
Sisi's election brought to an end the one-year chairmanship of Rwanda's President Paul Kagame.
African Union chairmen set agendas of issues to be addressed during their one-year tenure.
“The president’s agenda includes talks with world leaders with whom Sisi will tackle bilateral relations and international and regional developments of mutual interests,” added Rady.
G6, G7 or G8?
The G7 is made up of the world's seven largest so-called advanced economies: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States.
The initial group of six first met in 1975 "to exchange ideas on possible solutions" to a global economic crisis. Canada joined the following year.
Russia joined the group, which then became known as the G8, in 1998 but was suspended in 2014 after it annexed Crimea from Ukraine.
Ministers and civil servants from the G7 countries meet throughout the year to discuss matters of mutual interest.
Each member nation takes over the G7 presidency for a year on a rolling basis and hosts the annual centerpiece two-day summit meeting.
At the end of the summit a communiqué is issued, outlining what has been agreed.
The focus of the Biarritz summit is "the fight against inequality".
