Sisi, South African's Ramaphosa Discuss Renaissance Dam Issue

"President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi received a phone call from President Cyril Ramaphosa, President of the Republic of South Africa,” said Spokesperson for the Presidency Bassam Rady. 

Rady stated that the two presidents discussed mainly the developments of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam file, especially in light of Egypt's request from the U.N. Security Council to intervene in order to reach a fair and balanced agreement that takes into account the interests of all parties.

On his part, President Sisi reaffirmed the determinants and constants of the Egyptian position in this framework, as the Nile waters represent an existential issue for the people of Egypt.

Sisi Stresses on Egypt's Nile Waters 

“The president stressed the necessity of elaborating a comprehensive agreement between all the parties concerned about the rules for filling and operating the Renaissance Dam, and rejecting unilateral measures that would harm Egypt's rights in the waters of the Nile,” the spokesman added.

In the meantime, President Ramaphosa looked forward to intensifying coordination between the two countries during the coming period on this sensitive and vital issue. 

The South African president lauded the sincere and constructive political will that Egypt has always shown to reach a solution to the Renaissance Dam crisis.

Earlier, the presidency spokesman stated that President Sisi was briefed during the meeting on the developments of the Renaissance Dam file, taking into account the Egyptian determinants and constants in this regard, especially with regard to developing a comprehensive agreement between all parties concerned about the rules for filling and operating the dam.

Sisi stressed that Egypt rejects any unilateral act or action that violated his country’s rights in the waters of the Nile.

In this context, Sisi called for the continuation of moves at various levels to preserve Egypt’s water rights for the sake of present and future generations. 

“The president called for continuing the current diplomatic path of negotiation to resolve the Renaissance Dam crisis, especially by intensifying consultations in this regard with brotherly Sudan, alongside various international powers and member states of the Security Council,” Rady added.
