In a move to bolster Egypt’s energy independence and environmental sustainability, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has directed the government to accelerate the expansion of renewable energy projects while significantly reducing the nation's reliance on fossil fuels.

During a strategic briefing on Sunday with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Minister of Electricity Mahmoud Esmat, the President reviewed the nation’s energy roadmap. A primary focus of the meeting was securing the national grid against "unprecedented" consumption spikes expected during the summer of 2026.

Phasing Out Fossil Fuels

President El-Sisi emphasized that the transition to green energy is no longer just an environmental goal but a strategic necessity. By limiting fossil fuel consumption, Egypt aims to lower operational costs and mitigate the impact of global fuel price volatility. The President also called for the local manufacturing of electrical components to reduce imports and integrate modern technology into the domestic energy sector.

Achieving 2030 Goals Ahead of Schedule

Recent reports presented during the meeting confirmed that Egypt is on track to surpass its initial "2030 Energy Strategy" targets. The government aims for renewable energy to constitute 42% or more of the national energy mix, with much of this infrastructure already nearing completion ahead of the original timeline.

Key Technical Milestones:

Solar Expansion: 3,000 MW of solar power will be added to the grid this year alone.

Storage Innovations: Integration of 600 MW in battery storage capacity prior to summer to ensure grid stability during peak hours.

Regional Hub Status: Progress continues on electrical interconnection projects with neighboring countries, specifically the 1,500 MW Egypt-Saudi Arabia link, which is expected to support the grid by summer 2026.

President El-Sisi concluded by reaffirming that the stability of the power sector is fundamental to attracting foreign investment and maintaining industrial productivity. The Ministry of Electricity has been tasked with improving performance rates and reducing technical losses across all distribution networks.
