Sisi, Ramaphosa Agree to Continue Intensive Coordination Over GERD

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi received a phone call from President Cyril Ramaphosa, President of the Republic of South Africa, according to statements by Presidency Spokesperson Bassam Rady on Friday.

“During the phone call, the two leaders discussed the developments of the current position of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam file and the recent tripartite negotiations under the auspices of the African Union and in the presence of a number of international observers,” said Rady.

Sisi reaffirmed the principles of the Egyptian position on the basis of what the Nile waters represent in terms of the existential issue to the Egyptian people.

“The president stressed the imperative to conclude a comprehensive legal agreement between all parties concerned about the rules for filling and operating the dam,” Rady noted.

He pointed out that Sisi rejected unilateral measures that would cause harm to the rights of Egypt in the waters of the Nile.

In the meantime, the Egyptian president expressed his appreciation for the efforts of President Ramaphosa in this regard.

On his side, President Ramaphosa praised the constructive approach taken by Egypt during the recent round of negotiations on the Renaissance Dam under the auspices of the African Union.

“Cairo’s stance reflects the sincere Egyptian political will to reach a solution to the dam’s crisis,” Ramaphosa said.

Moreover, It was agreed to continue intensive coordination between the two countries on this vital issue, according to the Egyptian spokesperson.
