President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has issued a directive to ensure the stability of Egypt’s national electricity grid ahead of a predicted record-breaking surge in energy consumption this coming summer.

During a high-level meeting on Sunday with Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly and Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat, the President reviewed the Ministry's comprehensive plan to secure the country’s power supply. The move comes as officials anticipate a significant 6% to 7% increase in electricity loads compared to previous years.

Boosting Renewable Energy Capacity

To combat the rising demand, Minister Mahmoud Esmat announced that Egypt will add 3,000 megawatts (MW) of solar energy to the national grid within the current year. Additionally, the government is prioritizing advanced storage solutions, with plans to integrate 600 MW of new battery storage capacity before the summer peak. This will bring Egypt’s total grid-integrated storage capacity to 1,100 MW.

Ensuring Grid Stability and Quality

President El-Sisi emphasized the "necessity of absorbing unprecedented loads" while maintaining a consistent and uninterrupted power supply for all citizens. The President's directives focused on several key areas:

Grid Resilience: Ensuring the national network can handle peak consumption without disruptions.

Energy Mix Diversification: Accelerating the transition toward renewable sources to reduce reliance on traditional fuels.

Operational Efficiency: Applying strict quality standards and economic operation models to the power sector.

Addressing Violations: Strengthening efforts to prevent illegal electricity tapping and infrastructure encroachment.

The presidential spokesperson, Ambassador Mohamed El-Shennawy, noted that these measures are part of a broader national strategy to modernize Egypt’s energy infrastructure and support long-term economic growth through a sustainable and reliable power sector.
