Sisi, Mitsotakis Discuss Bilateral Relations, Regional Issues

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi received Monday Greece Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and held bilateral talks in Cairo in the presence of Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, Petroleum Minister Tarek El Molla, Electricity Minister Mohamed Shaker and Environment Minister Yasmine Foaud.

“The meeting witnessed the holding of bilateral talks, followed by extensive discussions between the delegations of the two countries,” said Presidency Spokesperson Bassam Rady.

Rady added that Sisi welcomed the Greek Prime Minister, praising the distinguished level of the extended and growing strategic bilateral relations between Egypt and Greece in all fields. 

Sisi stressed Egypt's keenness to strengthen the mechanisms of joint cooperation between the two friendly countries at various levels, especially at the political, military, commercial and energy levels, in addition to upgrading the existing cooperation within the framework of the tripartite mechanism with Cyprus, for the sake of the three countries’ common interests and goals in the eastern Mediterranean region as well as facing various challenges in the region.

On his part, the Greek Prime Minister expressed his country's pride in the close cooperation relations with Egypt, “which represent a model for constructive cooperation between the Mediterranean countries, especially in light of Egypt's distinguished position, regional weight and pivotal role in the region under the leadership of Sisi.”

Mitsotakis asserted that Greece will remain one of the supporters in addition to the Greek mutual interest in strengthening the joint cooperation process between the two countries, as well as developing the tripartite cooperation mechanism between Egypt, Greece and Cyprus, which is a successful and effective mechanism for coordination and regular institutional cooperation in achieving economic and social development for the three countries.

Moreover, the presidency spokesperson noted that the meeting witnessed discussions on ways to enhance prospects for bilateral cooperation between the two friendly countries.

The meeting also witnessed the exchange of visions and views on regional issues of common interest, in light of the stability of common positions between the two countries and the consistency of their interests in the eastern Mediterranean, with an emphasis that the East Mediterranean Gas Forum represents one of the most important tools in this framework, which would open up new horizons for cooperation and investment in the field of energy and gas.

Sisi and Mitsotakis also discussed the developments of the Palestinian cause. The Greek Prime Minister expressed his country's sincere appreciation for the Egyptian efforts led by President Sisi which led to a ceasefire between the Palestinian and Israeli sides, as well as the Egyptian initiative for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip. 

In this context, Sisi stressed the importance of working quickly to revive peace negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis on the basis of the resolutions of international legitimacy and the rules of international law.

The latest developments in Libya were also discussed. Both leaders agreed to support the existing political track to reach the desired electoral elections on its due date at the end of this year, in addition to the importance of the exit of all foreign forces and mercenaries from Libyan lands, the return of Libya to its people, and the restoration of its sovereignty, territorial integrity and stability.

They also discussed the issue of Nile water and the latest developments with regard to the Renaissance Dam negotiations. The two leaders also agreed on the importance of reaching a fair and balanced legal agreement on filling and operating the Renaissance Dam.
