Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry discussed the Libyan crisis, bilateral cooperation, and issues of common interest with his Saudi and Italian counterparts on Thursday.

Ahmed Hafez, a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that Shoukry and Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio discussed developments of the regional situation, especially the situation in Libya.

“The Egyptian FM stressed the importance of boosting all efforts seeking to reach a permanent and comprehensive solution through activating the Cairo Declaration which complements the Berlin track,” said Hafez.

Shoukry also warned of the consequences of illegal foreign interference in Libya and the transfer of foreign militants to Libya in light of the serious threat that this poses to stability in the region.

In this context, the Egyptian minister briefed his Italian counterpart about the meeting that took place early Thursday between President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and the Sheikhs and Notables of the Libyan tribes representing all spectra of the Libyan people in all parts of the country.

Moreover, Shoukry received a phone call from his Saudi counterpart, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, where the two diplomats discussed areas of bilateral cooperation and the most important issues of common concern.

“The two officials reiterated the solidarity and mutual support between Egypt and Saudi Arabia in facing all threats to their security and stability and the challenges they face.”

Shoukry and Prince Faisal stressed that the enormous challenges facing the region already require more coordination between the two brotherly countries, especially in the face of threats resulting from foreign presence and interference in the affairs of a number of sister Arab countries.

Hafez added that the two ministers stressed the importance of reaching a comprehensive settlement to the Libyan crisis that preserves the unity and territorial integrity of Libya and paves the way for the restoration of security and stability.

“The Egyptian and Saudi FMs expressed their rejection of external interventions that contribute to the proliferation of armed militias and the need to address firmly the transfer of foreign fighters, in a manner that supports the political settlement efforts based on the Cairo Declaration and within the framework of the goals agreed upon in the framework of the Berlin Conference,” Hafez noted.

The Foreign Ministry spokesman pointed out Shoukry discussed the Palestinian issue during the two phone conversations, with Italian and Saudi FMs, in addition to fostering bilateral cooperation between Cairo on one hand and Riyadh and Rome.
