The Moroccan Ministry of Energy announced that the British giant "Shell" will supply the country with 500 million cubic meters of liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually, under a 12-year contract.

The ministry said in a statement that the contract was signed on Friday in Rabat between the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) and Shell, while the value of this deal was not disclosed.

The agreement stipulates that Morocco will annually hand over 500 million cubic meters over 12 years, with a total volume of six billion cubic meters.

According to the agreement, LNG will be supplied during the first years from Spanish ports and shipped to Morocco via the European-Maghreb gas pipeline. Thereafter, the gas will be supplied directly via future Moroccan LNG conversion units.

It is noteworthy that on the first of last November, Algeria stopped supplying natural gas to Morocco through the Euro-Maghreb gas pipeline, after severing diplomatic relations with Rabat, amid escalating tensions between the two neighboring countries. Since then, the Kingdom has sought to diversify its options to cover its energy needs.
