Serbian President Vows No Sanctions Against Russia

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has affirmed to the Serbian news agency Tanjug that as long as he is in office, Serbia will not impose sanctions on Russia.

This declaration comes amid ongoing pressures from Western countries and internal opposition, which Vučić likens to the forced political shifts of the year 2000 that ousted former President Slobodan Milošević. Vučić's rhetoric emphasized Serbia's sovereignty and resistance to external mandates on sanction policies.

In February 2024, Vučić announced the formation of a broad non-partisan movement titled "For the People and the State," initially planned for June 2024 to preserve national integrity. However, the timeline has been repeatedly deferred since its conception in 2022.

Serbia has been experiencing widespread protests in various cities since November last year, initiated by the collapse of a railway station.

Educational institutions, including approximately 50 universities and colleges, have been occupied around the clock by students, who halted academic activities.

On December 16, amidst these upheavals, Vučić met with the leadership of the Security and Information Agency, appealing to protestors, particularly students and faculty, to resume their studies and not to be swayed by political manipulation.

In December, the government also released 195 documents related to the reconstruction of the Novi Sad railway station, categorized into five sections: Project, Trump, Monthly Reports, Weekly Reports, and Technical Examinations.

Following the protests, all detained individuals were released, and state universities saw a 20% increase in funding to aid recovery.
