Serbia is set to reinstate compulsory military service, more than a decade after it was abolished.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic confirmed on Saturday that he had signed an agreement for the return of mandatory service, which would last 75 days.

Speaking at a ceremony for cadet promotions at the Military Academy, Vucic emphasized the need for a stronger military force.

"We don't want to attack anyone. Nor will we do so. But we want to deter those who threaten us with savage relentlessness every day," he added, without specifying any potential threats.

The proposal still requires approval from both the Serbian government and parliament, where Vucic's party holds a strong majority.

Under the plan, military service would be mandatory for men, while women would have the option to serve voluntarily.

Vucic’s leadership has often drawn criticism from human rights organizations, accusing him of leaning toward authoritarianism as he solidified his power in Serbian politics.
