Serbia has reiterated its commitment to maintaining its relationship with Russia, refusing to bow to Western pressure to impose sanctions on Moscow.
Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vulin stated that Serbia will not abandon its right to choose its friends, even amid increasing calls from the European Union to distance itself from Russia.
Vulin emphasized that Serbia, while a small nation, is determined to retain its sovereignty and decision-making autonomy.
He asserted that Serbia will not succumb to external pressures to impose sanctions on Russia, as reported by the Russian news agency TASS.
This declaration comes in response to recent comments from an EU official urging Serbia to join the bloc's sanctions against Russia.
Vulin responded firmly, stating that Serbia is not so small as to give up its rights or independence in choosing its allies.
Previously, a senior Serbian official highlighted the ongoing efforts by Western politicians to convince Serbia that its long-standing, brotherly relationship with Russia is an unnecessary burden.
Despite these efforts, Vulin reaffirmed that Belgrade will continue to reject sanctions against Russia, even as EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell warned that Serbia's stance could conflict with its aspirations to join the EU.
