The International Day of Peace is celebrated around the world annually on September 21. The day aims to remind people of the UN's commitment to peace and a conflict-free world. It also encourages people to work together and toward a more peaceful world.
The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has declared this day as a time to strengthen the values of peace by promoting 24 hours of non-violence and a cease-fire.
According to the UN iLibrary, the International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the UNGA. In 2001, the General Assembly unanimously voted to make this day a period of non-violence and a cease-fire.
This year's theme is "Actions for Peace: Our Ambition for the #GlobalGoals".
"The theme is calling for action that recognizes our responsibility, both individually and collectively, to foster peace. By fostering peace, we can contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and create a culture of peace for all," said the UN.
The UN has recommended a few individual and group activities to participate in for International Peace Day to raise awareness about peace and global goals.

Last week, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, along with the President of the General Assembly, Dennis Francis, led the traditional Peace Bell ceremony and a minute of silence at the UN's Japanese Garden to mark the International Day.
The Peace Bell, cast from coins and medals donated from around the world, including by children, is rung twice a year - on the first day of Spring at the Vernal Equinox, in celebration of Earth Day, and to mark the International Day of Peace.
