Senegal has announced a plan to close 19 government agencies employing nearly 1,000 people, in a move aimed at reducing public spending. Authorities in the heavily indebted nation expect the decision to save at least 55 billion CFA francs (approximately $97.95 million) over the next three years.

CNBC reported on Saturday that the country is facing a worsening debt crisis, with debt reaching approximately 132% of GDP by the end of 2024, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which suspended its lending program to Senegal after discovering discrepancies in debt reporting.

A cabinet statement indicated that the Senegalese government will also work to strengthen oversight and evaluation systems, standardize salary structures, and ensure the optimal use of public funds.

The statement explained that the 19 entities slated for closure employed 982 people and had a total budget allocation of approximately 28.051 billion CFA francs (around $49.96 million) for 2025. The statement did not specify which entities were affected by the decision.

According to the statement, the annual payroll for these entities was estimated at 9.227 billion CFA francs, while their total debt amounted to approximately 2.6 billion CFA francs by the end of 2024.
