US Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, who represented South Carolina in the Senate, has died at the age of 71 after a sudden illness, according to a statement from his office.
The statement said Graham died on the evening of 11 July but did not provide further details about the cause of his illness.
Graham served as one of the Republican Party's most prominent voices on foreign policy and national security. He represented South Carolina in the US Senate for more than two decades after first taking office in 2003, following several years in the US House of Representatives.
He was also a longtime ally of President Donald Trump despite periods of political disagreement.
