The UN Security Council announced that it will hold a special session today, Thursday, to discuss the latest developments in Sudan, in light of the ongoing fighting between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces in El Fashir.
The UN envoy to Sudan, Volker Perthes, is scheduled to present a detailed report on the field and political situation, in addition to assessing regional and international efforts aimed at achieving a ceasefire and resuming dialogue between the warring parties.
This session comes after a recent escalation of fighting in the states of Darfur, White Nile and Khartoum, which has led to the displacement of tens of thousands of civilians and a severe deterioration of the humanitarian situation, amid warnings from aid organizations of the collapse of basic services and shortages of medical and food supplies.
