The secretary-general of the General Secretariat for Fatwa Authorities Worldwide on Tuesday warned of growing religious confusion driven by unregulated digital platforms and artificial intelligence.
Speaking under the patronage of Egypt’s Grand Mufti, Dr. Nazir Ayyad, Secretary-General Dr. Ibrahim Negm delivered a lecture titled “The Chaos of Fatwas in the Age of Artificial Intelligence” to members of Indonesian student unions in Cairo.
Negm stressed that issuing fatwas is a collective, institution-based scholarly responsibility, not an individual or automated process. He said digital transformation and AI can serve as powerful tools for spreading sound religious knowledge if properly regulated.
However, he cautioned that misuse of technology in religious guidance could pose serious risks to social stability and religious understanding if left without oversight.
The lecture highlighted the need for responsible governance of digital religious content in an increasingly connected world.
