Egypt took a significant step toward advancing its green economy ambitions with the launch of a national clean hydrogen program, a joint initiative between the Suez Canal Economic Zone and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization.
Announced at the authority’s headquarters in Egypt’s New Administrative Capital, the program aims to accelerate the country’s transition toward a competitive, hydrogen-based economy, positioning Egypt as a regional leader in green energy.
The initiative is designed to enhance Egypt’s readiness to attract investments in green hydrogen through a comprehensive set of measures. These include conducting pre-feasibility and feasibility studies for priority projects, offering technical support in policymaking, and strengthening institutional and national capacities.
A key component of the program is the establishment of a dedicated Center of Excellence for green hydrogen at the Sokhna hub, a strategic industrial zone within the SCZone.
The launch event brought together representatives from multiple government bodies, including the ministries of electricity, renewable energy, environment, and local development, alongside a UNIDO delegation led by Petra Schwager.
Walid Gamal El-Din, Chairman of the SCZone, described the initiative as a “critical milestone” in Egypt’s shift toward a green economy. He emphasized that clean energy projects and related industries are a top priority for the authority.
“This program strengthens our efforts by providing technical studies, institutional support, and capacity building, helping create a competitive and investment-friendly environment,” he said.
Officials say the program aligns with Egypt’s broader strategy to attract foreign direct investment, boost industrial competitiveness, and transform the energy mix within integrated industrial zones.
By leveraging its geographic location, existing infrastructure, and growing energy partnerships, Egypt aims to establish itself as a regional hub for the production, trade, and export of green hydrogen.
UNIDO reaffirmed its commitment to the partnership, highlighting Egypt’s strong potential to become a leading player in the global hydrogen market. The initiative forms part of a wider global clean hydrogen program funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), covering 10 countries, with Egypt playing a central role.
A joint steering committee comprising national and international stakeholders will oversee the program’s implementation, ensuring alignment with national priorities and effective coordination across institutions.
