Scottish Health Minister Hamza Yusuf said on Saturday he would run for the leadership to replace Nicola Sturgeon as leader of the National Party and head of the government of Scotland.
Youssef became the first to announce his intention to run after Sturgeon's sudden resignation last week.
I have decided to present myself as a candidate for the next First Minister of Scotland and Leader of the Scottish National Party," Yusuf said on Twitter.
The Scottish National Party said it would choose a new leader within six weeks through a ballot of its members, which closes on March 27. Sturgeon, 52, said she would not leave politics and would stay until a successor was chosen.
