Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney has called on the UK government to impose further sanctions on Israel as Britain prepares to recognize a Palestinian state formally.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to confirm the recognition on Sunday, following months of pressure on Israel to change course during the summer. However, according to PA Media, the situation has since deteriorated.
Welcoming the recognition of Palestine, Swinney described it as a historic moment but insisted it should not be conditional. He stressed that meaningful sanctions must accompany the decision to hold Israel accountable.
The Scottish leader also renewed calls for an immediate ceasefire and demanded unrestricted humanitarian aid access to Gaza.
Swinney is set to travel to London to take part in celebrations marking Britain’s recognition of a Palestinian state.
