Tens of thousands of people took to the streets in Paris and other French cities to denounce domestic violence after more than 130 women were killed by their partners or ex-partners this year.

Protesters in Paris, mostly women, shouted slogans against domestic violence and held banners in purple with slogans including "Enough killing!"

On his part, French President Emmanuel Macron expressed solidarity with the protest.

“I support every woman who has been through sexual or gender-based violence,” he said on Twitter. You can count on me to continuously mobilize the efforts of the government and the whole country for this great cause. "

The demonstrations, led by the women's association "Nous Tout" (all of us), come two days before the government is due to publish the results of an investigation into the issue.

Similar demonstrations were organized in other European countries, including Spain, in last September. Back then, thousands of protesters rallied streets in more than 250 towns and cities in Spain, denouncing violence against women, after 40 cases were observed this year for being killed by their partner or ex-partners.

As reported by Euro News, an estimated 35% of women worldwide (around one in three women) have experienced domestic or sexual violence. It’s a percentage that many experts find staggering, saying it reveals a global crisis against women.

"I find it very sad that in every society we have violence against women. In every society," said Marceline Naudi, the President of the Council of Europe's Group of Experts on Action against Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (GREVIO).

"I don’t think that we can say some societies are worse than others because sadly that one in three, one in four [statistic] holds almost everywhere," she added.
