On Tuesday, the results of the latest studies conducted in Antarctica were posted by the Earth website.

Researchers drilled more than 1,600 feet into the West Antarctic Ice Sheet and discovered a subglacial river flowing beneath the Ross Ice Shelf.

This discovery is offering a new insight into how Antarctica melts from below, and it could have big implications for the future of coastal towns and cities.

The river is a blend of freshwater and seawater, and it is making its way toward the ocean.

The leader of the latest expedition, Huw Horgan, said, "We struck water at the end of the borehole and with the help of our camera, we even discovered a school of lobster-like creatures — 400 kilometers from the open ocean."

These surges of the river, which are increased every decade, may carve out channels in the ice, so it helps in sustaining hidden ecosystems.

Scientists believe that monitoring this river can help in observing the sea levels.
