New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that all public schools in the city will be closed on Monday due to severe winter weather, with classes continuing remotely.
In a statement posted on the social media platform X and cited by CNN on Sunday, Mamdani said the decision will affect around 500,000 students across more than 1,100 public schools.
The move comes as harsh winter conditions, including heavy snowfall and extremely low temperatures, continue to impact large parts of the United States.
In a related development, schools in Nashville, Tennessee, are also scheduled to close on Monday and Tuesday.
The city has experienced widespread power outages after heavy snow caused tree branches to fall onto power lines.
A powerful winter storm has knocked out electricity to more than 750,000 homes and businesses nationwide.
Tennessee has been the hardest-hit state, with power cuts affecting more than 250,000 customers, followed by Texas, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
Nearly half of the U.S. population is experiencing the effects of the storm, as nighttime temperatures in some cities have dropped below minus 20 degrees Celsius.
On Saturday, U.S. President Donald Trump approved federal emergency declarations for several states, including South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, Maryland, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Indiana, and West Virginia, describing the storm as “historic.”
