Germany's Chancellor Olaf Scholz has confirmed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s participation in a two-day EU summit opening in Brussels on Thursday.

Scholz has once again pledged that Germany would support Kiev as long as necessary.

At a joint press conference with the French and Ukrainian presidents, Emmanuel Macron and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in Paris on Wednesday, Scholz stressed that the current situation in Ukraine and its repercussions "will play a major role" in the upcoming EU summit.

He stressed that Zelenskyy's participation in the first meeting of EU heads of state and government is a "strong signal".

"I am going to Brussels with a very clear statement that Ukraine is part of the European family," the German chancellor said, recalling that Ukraine and Moldova were granted the status of candidates for EU membership in June 2022.

According to the German Scholz, since the beginning of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine, Europe and partners abroad have been providing Kyiv with large-scale financial, humanitarian, and military support. "And we will continue to do so as long as necessary," he stressed.

The two-day EU summit begins in Brussels on Thursday. It will focus on the conflict in Ukraine.

According to a high-level EU representative, European leaders will discuss aid to Ukraine, including possible supplies of combat aircraft.

Regardless, the issue of using frozen Russian assets to revive post-conflict Ukraine will also be on the agenda.
