Saudi Arabia reaffirmed on Wednesday its steadfast support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) as an essential partner in providing education, healthcare, and humanitarian relief to Palestinian refugees, stressing that the agency's role is irreplaceable and indispensable.
This came during a speech delivered by the Kingdom's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Wasil, while chairing the UN General Assembly Ad Hoc Committee for the Announcement of Voluntary Contributions to UNRWA, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
Dr. Al-Wasil explained that Saudi Arabia is among the largest donors to the agency, driven by its recognition of the vital role UNRWA plays in supporting Palestinian refugees.
He renewed the Kingdom's firm commitment to backing both the agency and the Palestinian people.
Furthermore, he warned that the targeting of UNRWA is part of attempts to liquidate the Palestinian refugee issue outside the framework of international law.
He also pointed out that the financial crisis facing the agency threatens its ability to perform its core duties, calling for an urgent closing of the funding gap to ensure the continuity of its services.
Moreover, he noted that the Kingdom has allocated financial aid to implement development and humanitarian projects through UNRWA, thereby boosting its capacity to meet the growing needs of Palestinian refugees.
