Saudi Arabia has strongly denounced the terrorist attack targeting the Green Zone in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, according to Sputnik News agency.

In an official statement issued on Monday, Saudi Foreign Ministry said, "The Kingdom stands by the brotherly Republic of Iraq in the measures it takes to preserve its security and stability, maintain its sovereignty, and protect the lives of its citizens and residents."

It is worth mentioning that, at least eight Katyusha rockets landed in Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone on Sunday, in an attack targeting the U.S. Embassy, according to the Iraqi Military.

“The attack caused some minor damage on the compound,  but that there were no injuries or casualties,” the statement added.

On its part, the U.S. Embassy denounced the attack, urging all Iraqi political and governmental leaders to take steps to prevent such attacks and to hold accountable those responsible.

This attack came as tensions mount ahead of the anniversary of the US killing of top Iranian general Qasem Soleimani.
