During an extraordinary session of the United Nations General Assembly, Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Representative to the UN in New York, Ambassador Dr. Abdulaziz bin Mohammed Al-Wasil, called for a ceasefire in Gaza and expressed support for a ceasefire in Lebanon.
In a statement delivered at the resumed tenth emergency special session regarding Palestine, Ambassador Al-Wasil emphasized the negative impact of selective international law enforcement and veto rights abuses, contributing to ongoing genocide and Israeli crimes in Gaza.
Ambassador Al-Wasil condemned the systematic targeting of the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) by Israeli legislation and highlighted UNRWA's crucial role.
He called for active participation in the upcoming high-level international conference to settle the Palestinian issue, scheduled for June in New York, co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France.
The ambassador reaffirmed Saudi Arabia's unwavering support for the Palestinian people and their rights, advocating peace based on a two-state solution aligned with the Arab Peace Initiative and international legal resolutions.
He also condemned Israeli attacks on Syrian territory, which he claimed violate international law and hinder Syria’s recovery and territorial integrity, emphasizing the Arab identity of the occupied Golan Heights.
The resolutions supporting UNRWA and demanding a ceasefire in Gaza received broad support, with 159 votes for the UNRWA support resolution, 9 against, and 11 abstentions.
The ceasefire resolution garnered 158 votes in favor, 9 against, and 13 abstentions.
