Sahel-Saharan Counter-Terrorism Center Officially Inaugurated (Photos)

The Community of Sahel-Saharan States officially opened on Thursday the CEN-SAD Counterterrorism Center in Cairo within the framework of Egypt’s efforts to support the capabilities of its brothers from the African countries and to emphasize the pivotal Egyptian role in its continental environment.

The CEN-SAD Counter-Terrorism Center is one of the most important components and mechanisms of the Sahel-Saharan Community, with the signing of the headquarters agreement between the Assistant Minister of Defense for Foreign Relations on behalf of the Arab Republic of Egypt and the Acting Executive Secretary of the Community of the Sahel and Sahara.

Major General Mohamed Salah, Assistant Minister of Defense for Foreign Relations, delivered a speech in which he conveyed greetings from Lieutenant-General Mohamed Zaki, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Minister of Defense and Military Production, and Lieutenant-General Osama Askar, Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces.

He stressed that the center was established to coordinate the efforts of the member states of the assembly and exchange information that would help these states to comprehensively confront terrorism.

Ambassador Mohamed Karim, Deputy Assistant Foreign Minister for African Organizations and Gatherings, delivered a speech in which he congratulated the establishment of the Sahel-Saharan Center, hoping that it would achieve its desired message of supporting peace and security and achieving its goals in the face of terrorism.

On his part, Major General Mohamed Abdel Baset, Director-General of the Counter-Terrorism Center of the Community of Sahel-Saharan States delivered a speech in which he pointed out that the organization has developed its activities and effectiveness in several areas, including development, economic, social and others to serve the African community until it touched on the security field and combating terrorism.

Ambassador Abdel Rahim El Kadiri, Executive Secretary of the Community of Sahel and Sahara, delivered a speech in which he congratulated President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and General Mohamed Zaki, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and Minister of Defense and Military Production on the establishment of the Center for the Sahel and Saharan.

He affirmed that the values ​​underlying the establishment of the Center are solidarity, the consolidation of brotherhood among peoples and the necessity of a collective and effective struggle against terrorism.

It's noteworthy that the opening ceremony was held at the Counter-Terrorism Center of the Community of Sahel- Saharan States in Cairo, in the presence of local and foreign media representatives.

The Community of Sahel-Saharan States consists of 25 African countries bordering the Sahara or the Sahel region. It was established on February 4, 1998 in Tripoli (Libya).

The Community of Sahel–Saharan States’ Development Strategy, which is in line with the African Union’s Agenda 2063, constitutes a set of exceptional measures whose implementation, in the short and medium term, will enable the solution of the most targeted problems.

The Community of Sahel-Saharan States will also seek to align its activities with those of other multilateral actors and to strengthen its partnership with them.
