S. Korea's Yoon to Attend NATO Summit

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol will attend a NATO summit in Lithuania next week, the presidential office announced on Thursday.

Yoon will also have arrangements underway for a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

The South Korean president will visit Vilnius from Monday to Wednesday, the second time he will have participated in a gathering of the Western alliance, according to the presidential office. 

He will then make an official visit to Poland on Thursday.

If the topic of Japan's plan to release treated radioactive water from the disaster-hit Fukushima nuclear power plant into the sea comes up, Yoon "will mention what he thinks necessary based on (the government's) principle of prioritizing the people's health," an official of the presidential office said.

The Japan-South Korea summit would come about a week after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Tuesday provided reassurance on the safety of the water discharge plan, with Tokyo seeking to gain understanding from its neighbors including South Korea.
