South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol successfully avoided an impeachment attempt on Saturday as lawmakers from the ruling party boycotted the parliamentary vote.

The motion, initiated by opposition parties, failed to gather the required support to proceed.

Under South Korean law, a presidential impeachment requires the backing of at least two-thirds of the National Assembly's 300 members—equivalent to 200 votes.

Opposition parties, which collectively hold 192 seats, spearheaded the impeachment motion.

However, only three lawmakers from the ruling People Power Party participated in the vote, leaving the motion short of the necessary quorum.

The proposal was dismissed without a formal count, as the number of participating lawmakers did not meet the minimum threshold for a valid vote.
