The Egypt Defence Expo (EDEX) 2021 kicked off this week with 40 countries and 350 companies around the world taking part in the largest defense exhibition in Africa.
The EDEX 2021 was held in Cairo on Monday, marking the second time following 2018’s inaugural event. South Korean firms took part in the EDEX exhibition where they showcased their latest armaments.

More than a dozen Korean companies are taking part with Hanwha Defense Co., showcasing its 155-millimeter howitzer with a maximum firing range of 40 kilometers.
Meanwhile, the company is in negotiations with the Egyptian military to export the armament along with k-10 ammunition resupply vehicles, Korean media reported. The howitzer has already been sold to Turkey, Norway, and Finland.
If the negotiations have become successful, the howitzer will be exported to countries in the middle east and the Africa region, raising hopes for more defense exports to the area.
On his part, An Byung-chul, head of Hanwha Defense’s Overseas Business Division, stated that the K9 Thunder is being used in seven different countries including Korea where it was domestically designed and developed. “We are aiming to export this to more countries around the world,” he added.
In the same vein, another South Korean firm, Hyundai Rotem, also showcased the K2 Black Panther tank because tanks are significantly more expensive than howitzers.
Negotiations for exporting the tanks have not yet started but the company has already won the contract to build subway trains for Egypt, according to reports.
“Egypt is showing a lot of interest in our tanks. It won’t be easy to export them right now but we plan on doing this in the long term,” Seo Jun-mo, global defense sales & marketing team leader at Hyundai Rotem, noted.
