South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has nominated Han Seong-sook, the country's minister for SMEs and startups, as prime minister.
If approved by parliament, Han will become South Korea's first female prime minister in two decades.
Presidential Chief of Staff Kang Hoon-sik said Han, a former CEO of internet giant, is expected to lead the country's AI-driven transformation and help translate growth in the semiconductor and export sectors into broader economic benefits.
The nomination reflects the administration's focus on technology, innovation, and support for small and medium-sized businesses as key drivers of future growth.
Under South Korea's presidential system, the prime minister's role is largely administrative and ceremonial, although the position plays an important part in coordinating government policy.
