A court in South Korea has sentenced former first lady Kim Keon Hee to seven years in prison after convicting her of accepting bribes in the form of luxury gifts in exchange for political favors.
The Seoul Central District Court ruled that Kim received expensive items, including jewelry, a Dior handbag, a luxury watch, and artwork before and during the presidency of her husband, former President Yoon Suk Yeol.
The court found that Kim used her position as first lady to influence appointments and provide business-related advantages. In addition to the prison sentence, she was fined 64.8 million won and ordered to forfeit any recovered gifts linked to the bribery case.
Kim has denied all charges, according to South Korea's Yonhap News Agency, and her legal team said it will appeal the ruling, arguing that the court overstated the evidence against her.
