South Korea's foreign, trade, and defense ministries have restricted access to the Chinese artificial intelligence service DeepSeek, citing concerns over user data collection.
According to government sources, access to the AI service has been blocked on ministry computers connected to external networks.
The decision, reported by Yonhap News Agency on Thursday, reflects growing fears over data security risks associated with foreign AI platforms.
A defense ministry official attributed the restriction to "technical concerns," particularly regarding military operations.
These three ministries handle highly sensitive information related to foreign affairs, trade, and national security, making data protection a top priority.
South Korea's Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) has also launched an inquiry into DeepSeek's data handling practices, joining other countries like France and Ireland, which have raised similar concerns.
The move follows Australia's recent ban on DeepSeek across all government devices, citing an unacceptable national security risk.
