Russian popular opposition leader Alexei Navalny passed away at the age of 47 in prison, Russian prison officials announced on Friday.
Navalny fell to the ground and died during a walk in the prison where he was serving his jail term.
The Federal Penitentiary Service of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District announced that Navalny felt ill after a walk at the IK-3 penal colony in Kharp, in the Arctic Circle.
After the walk, he lost consciousness and died. The medical team in the prison did their best efforts to save Navalny, but all attempts to resuscitate him failed.The Kremlin said that Russian President Vladimir Putin was informed.
