The Russian Embassy in the United States has announced that the conflict in Ukraine is approaching its conclusion, citing a shift in American foreign policy under the current administration. Speaking at an embassy event commemorating "Defender of the Fatherland Day," Russian diplomat Andrei Ledenyev stated that recent high-level negotiations in Geneva indicate a significant move toward a settlement.
According to the Youm7 report published on Saturday, February 21, 2026, Ledenyev highlighted that the current U.S. administration is "actively supporting settlement negotiations." This stands in sharp contrast to the previous administration's policy, which Moscow characterized as pursuing an "unrealistic dream" of inflicting a strategic defeat on Russia.
The Geneva Breakthrough
The optimism follows a two-day summit held in Geneva on February 17-18, which brought together delegations from Russia, Ukraine, and the United States. Vladimir Medinsky, head of the Russian delegation, confirmed that the talks were productive and that a follow-up round of negotiations is expected shortly.
Key Conditions for Peace
The Kremlin has indicated that long-term stability hinges on resolving territorial disputes according to formulas discussed during earlier summits in Alaska. Moscow maintains that a vital prerequisite for any permanent ceasefire is the total withdrawal of Ukrainian armed forces from the Donbas region.
Russian officials noted that the U.S. has reportedly acknowledged that a lasting settlement cannot be reached without addressing these territorial realities. As diplomatic momentum builds, the international community is closely watching for the formalization of a peace treaty that could finally bring an end to the multi-year conflict.
